Carbon dredge-up required to explain the Gaia white dwarf colour-magnitude bifurcation
The Gaia colour--magnitude diagram reveals a striking separation between
hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs and their helium-atmosphere counterparts
throughout a significant portion of the white dwarf cooling track. However,
pure-helium atmospheres have Gaia magnitudes that are too close to the
pure-hydrogen case to explain this bifurcation. To reproduce the observed split
in the cooling sequence, it has been shown that trace amounts of hydrogen
and/or metals must be present in the helium-dominated atmospheres of
hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs. Yet, a complete explanation of the Gaia
bifurcation that takes into account known constraints on the spectral evolution
of white dwarfs has thus far not been proposed. In this work, we attempt to
provide such a holistic explanation by performing population synthesis
simulations coupled with state-of-the-art model atmospheres and evolutionary
calculations that account for element transport in the envelopes of white
dwarfs. By relying on empirically grounded assumptions, these simulations
successfully reproduce the bifurcation. We show that the convective dredge-up
of optically undetectable traces of carbon from the deep interior is crucial to
account for the observations. Neither the convective dilution/mixing of
residual hydrogen nor the accretion of hydrogen or metals can be the dominant
drivers of the bifurcation. Finally, we emphasize the importance of improving
theoretical models for the average ionization level of carbon in warm dense
helium, which governs the shape of the diffusive tail of carbon and in turn the
predicted amount of dredged-up carbon.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, minor changes following reports

Consisting of two academic papers, this Master’s thesis explores, operationalizes and measures the concept of mediatization in the context of public administration. As a first step, a scoping review of the literature is deployed to highlight the main topics discussed in the literature on the mediatization of politics, to identify gaps in the field, as well as to better understand how studies on mediatization align with the broader literature on political communication. The scoping process indicates that: (1) Studies investigating the association of the political sphere and the news media logics constitute the majority of studies on mediatization while the influence of media logic on the public administration is few studied; (2) Approaches used to study mediatization of politics are mostly qualitative; (3) Mediatization of public administration has been quantitatively analyzed in an essentially European setting; and (4) Indicators used to measure the degree of mediatization are still greatly heterogeneous between studies. The second part of the thesis fits precisely into these gaps defined by operationalizing the concept of mediatization of public administration and evaluating its evolution in the public service using the case of Quebec’s ministries from 2003 to 2017. This paper aims to answer the following research question: What is the evolution in the degree of mediatization among Quebec’s Ministries ? An automated content analysis with machine learning is deployed to analyze a large body of strategic administrative documents. Two evaluations of mediatization are compared :a categorical measure and a measure of salience. The results show that the aggregation of nine indicators—all of which measure the mediatization of public administration— makes it possible to measure the concept reliably. Applied to the case of Quebec, the measure shows an increase in the level of mediatization in all ministries. The results make it possible to formulate questions regarding the operationalization of the mediatization of public administration. The analysis also shows that salience appears to be a reliable measure for data from the public administration
The ubiquity of carbon dredge-up in hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs as revealed by GALEX
The convective dredge-up of carbon from the interiors of hydrogen-deficient
white dwarfs has long been invoked to explain the presence of carbon absorption
features in the spectra of cool DQ stars ().
It has been hypothesized that this transport process is not limited to DQ white
dwarfs and also operates, albeit less efficiently, in non-DQ hydrogen-deficient
white dwarfs within the same temperature range. This non-DQ population is
predominantly composed of DC white dwarfs, which exhibit featureless optical
spectra. However, no direct observational evidence of ubiquitous carbon
pollution in DC stars has thus far been uncovered. In this Letter, we analyze
data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) to reveal the photometric
signature of ultraviolet carbon lines in most DC white dwarfs in the
temperature range. Our
results show that the vast majority of hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs
experience carbon dredge-up at some point in their evolution.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

Procedural learning in Tourette syndrome, ADHD, and comorbid Tourette-ADHD: Evidence from a probabilistic sequence learning task
Procedural memory, which is rooted in the basal ganglia, plays an important role in the implicit learning of motor and cognitive skills. Few studies have examined procedural learning in either Tourette syndrome (TS) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), despite basal ganglia abnormalities in both of these neurodevelopmental disorders. We aimed to assess procedural learning in children with TS (n = 13), ADHD (n = 22), and comorbid TS-ADHD (n = 20), as well as in typically developing children (n = 21). Procedural learning was measured with a well-studied implicit probabilistic sequence learning task, the alternating serial reaction time task. All four groups showed evidence of sequence learning, and moreover did not differ from each other in sequence learning. This result, from the first study to examine procedural memory across TS, ADHD and comorbid TS-ADHD, is consistent with previous findings of intact procedural learning of sequences in both TS and ADHD. In contrast, some studies have found impaired procedural learning of non-sequential probabilistic categories in TS. This suggests that sequence learning may be spared in TS and ADHD, while at least some other forms of learning in procedural memory are impaired, at least in TS. Our findings indicate that disorders associated with basal ganglia abnormalities do not necessarily show procedural learning deficits, and provide a possible path for more effective diagnostic tools, and educational and training programs
Personality, executive control, and neurobiological characteristics associated with different forms of risky driving
Background: Road crashes represent a huge burden on global health. Some drivers are prone to repeated episodes of risky driving (RD) and are over-represented in crashes and related morbidity. However, their characteristics are heterogeneous, hampering development of targeted intervention strategies. This study hypothesized that distinct personality, cognitive, and neurobiological processes are associated with the type of RD behaviours these drivers predominantly engage in. Methods: Four age-matched groups of adult (19-39 years) males were recruited: 1) driving while impaired recidivists (DWI, n = 36); 2) non-alcohol reckless drivers (SPEED, n = 28); 3) drivers with a mixed RD profile (MIXED, n = 27); and 4) low-risk control drivers (CTL, n = 47). Their sociodemographic, criminal history, driving behaviour (by questionnaire and simulation performance), personality (Big Five traits, impulsivity, reward sensitivity), cognitive (disinhibition, decision making, behavioural risk taking), and neurobiological (cortisol stress response) characteristics were gathered and contrasted. Results: Compared to controls, group SPEED showed greater sensation seeking, disinhibition, disadvantageous decision making, and risk taking. Group MIXED exhibited more substance misuse, and antisocial, sensation seeking and reward sensitive personality features. Group DWI showed greater disinhibition and more severe alcohol misuse, and compared to the other RD groups, the lowest level of risk taking when sober. All RD groups exhibited less cortisol increase in response to stress compared to controls. Discussion: Each RD group exhibited a distinct personality and cognitive profile, which was consistent with stimulation seeking in group SPEED, fearlessness in group MIXED, and poor behavioural regulation associated with alcohol in group DWI. As these group differences were uniformly accompanied by blunted cortisol stress responses, they may reflect the disparate behavioural consequences of dysregulation of the stress system. In sum, RD preference appears to be a useful marker for clarifying explanatory pathways to risky driving, and for research into developing more personalized prevention efforts
Response time to a vibrotactile stimulus presented on the foot at rest and during walking on different surfaces
This study investigates the simple reaction time (SRT) and response time (RT) to a vibrotactile stimulus presented on two body locations at the lower extremity of the foot on different types of surface during walking. We determined RTs while walking on Concrete, Foam, Sand, and gravel surface. Also, for RT, we evaluated two vibrotactile stimulus (VS) locations on the lower extremity: the ankle (AL) and under the foot plantar (FP). A total of 21 young adult participants (n = 21), aged mean 24 ± 2.9 years, took part in a two-session experiment with two main conditions (at rest and while walking on four types of surface). The control session included 2016 repeated measures, with one-way and two-way ANOVA analyses. The findings have consistently revealed slowness of RT to VS, in particular on sand and gravel surface. In addition, we found that body location has a significant effect on RT in certain surfaces. These results showed that RTs increased with environment changes during the performance of dual tasks
